The histories of the most prominent manufacturers of mobile phones are not so cloudless. Some of them can boast about their great… failures!
Do Not Do This Anymore or Great Failures in the World of Mobile Devices
IT companies invest a lot of money in the development, they entice specialists from each other, and do everything possible to attract as many customers as possible. But even so, there are failures and even complete disasters sometimes. In this article, we will collect the biggest failures in IT, namely mobile phones area, in recent years.

Windows Mobile Development
Windows Mobile set the tone in the era of communicators, but Microsoft has gone to the bottom of the mobile market with the advent of iOS and Android. First, it released ridiculous Kin smartphones and a Zune player and then introduced the Windows Phone operating system.
This project looked very promising and was considered the third force on the market for a long time. It seemed, yet a couple more years – and it will grow a real competitor to the operating systems Apple and Google. The system looked interesting and worked quickly but did not offer anything special. Due to the fact that there were few users, developers released few applications: a vicious circle.
Today, mobile Windows is installed at only 1.41% of devices worldwide. Android has 66.71%, and iOS has 29.55%. At this rate, very soon we will see only Android and iOS in the OS statistics for smartphones, and Windows Phone will be in the column “Others” along with Blackberry OS, Symbian, and other losers.
Samsung Galaxy Note 7
They say the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Samsung is the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world, and the failure of the company is the most epic among all. If the described model has only harmed their finances and reputation, however, the South Koreans have also traumatized people with their Galaxy Note 7.
There was a defect in the electrodes because of the battery design. It led to the closure and damage of the insulation layer. The devicesignited and often wounded people or damaged their property. Then, they released a fixed lot with new batteries. Because of the haste, there was a lot of spoilage, so these devices also ignited. As a result, Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was taken out of production.
The head of Samsung Mobile said that this failure is the most painful for him for 33 years of work in the company. Losses because of the failure amounted to about $5.3 billion.
HTC After 2013
At the dawn of Android, HTC probably was the most popular smartphone manufacturer. In 2009, the legendary HTC HD2 and the first Android-smartphone HTC Dream appeared. In 2010, Desire appeared, in 2011 – Desire S and Incredible S, and in 2012 – One X. They all were very successful smartphones, and the business looked well for the Taiwanese then.
In 2013, the company released HTC One, a beautiful and powerful smartphone; it was called the iPhone in the world of Android. Then, everything went wrong. Well, it is not that the next flagships were bad. No, they did not differ much in design from the first One, they had modern hardware, and there were no special problems.
But at the same time, the company could not compete with Samsung and Apple, while LG and Sony did and do good flagships. In the middle and law price segments, the Taiwanese cannot oppose anything to Chinese smartphones; they are cheaper, much better in terms of characteristics, and they are quality as well. So today, man does not buy HTC either for big money or for cheap price.
The news about HTC losses appear as often as new devices of the company. Losses are already six quarters in a row, and in 2016, revenue was the smallest since 2005.
It is very sad that the manufacturer does not change its way, so the difficulties do not go away. Recently, the company decided to leave the public sector. HTC did not stop producing phones, it simply sells the phones for the price of the middle ones.
Google had everything to make Android Wear the leader of the smart watch market. There were no strong competitors, the system was actively used by manufacturers. Almost a year before the release of Apple Watch, Android Wear watches won only about 30% of the market for a wide variety of smart watches that were already on the market.
Apple Watch grabbed 75% of the market almost immediately after the release. Android Wear has decreased almost threefold, to 11%. However, the failure of a particular platform is not so critical because smart watches are generally needless. In the second quarter of 2016, the supply of all smart watches fell by 30% compared to the same period last year. This is no wonder: from year to year, manufacturers produce almost identical watches. It just does not make sense to update.

Google Glass and Project Ara
Two projects of the Google’s future, which are postponed indefinitely. Officially, the development did not end, but unlikely we will see smart glasses and a modular phone in the form in which their prototypes came out.
They can be included into the failures because they, in theory, were about to turn out. Buying Google Glass was even not a particular problem if you were willing to pay for them about $1000. At first, smart glasses seemed very cool, but then the understanding came abruptly that they did actually anything useful and looked so-so. The same smart watches have similar functionality, they are cheaper and do not turn you into a nerd. Apparently, the current technologies do not allow the scientists to make from Google Glass a really useful product that users need.
The development of the modular smartphone Project Ara came to a stand still because of a technical progress, too. There were working prototypes and preparations for sales in Costa Rica, but then the project was stopped “within the framework of rationalization.” However, if initially to the smartphone was a huge interest, then at the end, the noise died down.
On smartphones Project Ara, it was impossible to change the key elements: processor, screen, and RAM. That is, it was not possible toupgrade the phonegradually, so that it remained relevant. Those who waited for the release of Project Ara, they wanted this. It would be great to replace Snapdragon 821 with 835 in 2017, and put 6 GB instead of 3 GB of RAM. But it seems that such an opportunity will not appear soon.
Failures are normal: you can invest as much money as you have and endlessly hire “gateses” and “wozniaks,” but you cannot create good things permanently. The most important thing is to draw out a lesson from failures.
